Track Premiere: My Girl The River “Everywhere You Go”

Everywhere You Go‘ is an undoubted love song about being flawed – but also devoted.  It finds My Girl The River hitting a west coast early 70s vibe with a ‘Whiter Shade of Pale’ organ sound (Harry Whitty) and some subtle lead guitar (Steve Lee). Add in the three part family harmony from the start – and an unforgettable
chorus.  ‘Everywhere You Go‘ as written, performed and produced by Kris Wilkinson Hughes aka My Girl The River with husband Joe on bass and harmonies and daughter Rue also on harmonies.   It was recorded and engineered by Chris Pepper at Saltwell Studios near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire.
Speaking of the song Kris told Americana-UK that “I feel like the songs I’m writing at the moment have more to offer in the way of hope and positivity. There is a cohesion and they feel like an album. ‘Everywhere You Go’ certainly has honesty and hope. I am sure folks can relate to not always being on their best behaviour and letting their anger or bad habits or moods get the better of them at times. But I also think awareness is key and that is what this song is about. It’s about admitting you know you get it wrong, you recognise it and you want to do better because you love this person deeply and they deserve better. It’s about wanting to grow as a person and be more dedicated to your relationship. At the moment I am home most of the time and Joe leaves every morning to go to work. I try to send him off with a kiss and the knowledge that I love him and appreciate him very much.”
She added that the sound of the song might not be immediately what listeners have come to expect from My Girl The River, but “‘I don’t think we should feel locked into genre or sound.  I hear what I hear when I’m producing and organ definitely felt right. Harry Whitty understood the assignment. It’s gorgeous. And our old friend Steve Lee brings his magical guitar sounds. It’s a perfect compliment. Joe really loves this song and he wanted to sing above the melody. We decided to start with the chorus because for one it’s not done very much these days and two, it’s so beautiful. Instantly singable. Lots of hooks in this song. Chris Pepper at Saltwell did a fab job mixing. I’m really happy with the final version.”

Releasing ‘Everywhere You Go‘ also marks the start of a crowdfunding campaign for My Girl The River’s fourth album.  They say that “We know it’s tricky right now to ask people to invest in our project. We hope folks will resonate with the new song and want to join us in creating the next album. This will be our first release on vinyl and we are so excited! If you ever wanted to be an executive producer on a record, welcome aboard! We came up with some amazing rewards, something for everyone and every budget. Even just sharing the link to the crowdfunder helps us out so much.”  You can find more information and support the project here.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
