Many acts that are decades into their careers will lean heavily on the sounds and themes that first caught the attention of fans in their early years, leading to watered-down, inauthentic material they can sandwich in with their hits on stage. Or even worse they “re-discover their roots” and put out yet another dreary blues covers album. Not the Cowboy Junkies. The Canadian quartet has leaned unabashedly into middle-age and mortality on their new album ‘Such Ferocious Beauty’. Following on the heels of the poignantly heartbreaking ‘What I Lost’, this new video features songwriter Michael Timmins and Singer Margo Timmins performing a stripped down acoustic version of the second single ‘Shadows 2’.
Of the track, Michael Timmins says, “The song was inspired by the DH Lawrence poem Shadows. He wrote a series of poems contemplating his death as he approached the end of his life. I wrote the song as our Dad was falling deeper into his dementia and was losing the world around him. ‘Shadows 2’ starts from the point of view of the song’s character (my Dad), watching his world disappear, and at the end flips to the point of the story-teller (me), watching him disappear.”
‘Such Ferocious Beauty’ will be available starting 2nd June on all streaming services.
