Martin Simpson “The Recruited Collier” – off to the wars

And we ask ourselves yet again have we accidentally slipped into a themed week again, as we head off again into the world of well-known folk artists with big new releases.  Let’s see how the week pans out.

Martin Simpson has a new single The Recruited Collier, a song that harks back to the European wars of the early 19th century.  It’s a song that is well-known – but Martin Simpson brings his own distinctive guitar work to the arrangement and there are a few lines that may not be familiar which adds an even more melancholic twist to the song’s closing.

The Recruited Collier is taken from the new album  Some Kind Of Jubilee,  of which Martin states: “Some Kind Of Jubilee represents a 50 year recording career, but 60 years and more of a life in music. From listening to Paul Robeson at four years of age, to growing up and playing in the ‘60’s folk boom, through becoming a professional in the early 70’s, and subsequent decades of playing, learning, and working, are all reflected here. This is not looking back, but carrying forward the accumulated skills of a lifetime”.  The full album will release on 25th September 2026 with pre-sale beginning on 8th May 2026.

And there’s a tie-in tour this Autum and early part of Winter (and here we are talking of Winter with Summer not yet fully here yet!).  And, very handily, we have the tour poster – so get those dates in the diary (even better, get those tickets in your on-line ticket wallet of preference).

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
