Pixie & The Partygrass Boys “Powder Day” – actual snow…

We’re pretty convinced that there’s no subtle subtext to this song, and that when Pixie sings about snow then it’s the crystallized flakes of water that are being referenced.  We’re aware though of the Partygrass side of the band so some, ahem, “other” meaning could be construed.  But, taken as written ‘Powder Day‘ is a gleeful song to the joys of ski-ing and the absence of loyalty to anyone who can’t keep up on the slopes.

Pixie & The Partygrass Boys  are Salt Lake City-based purveyors of bluegrass, and today’s song is taken from their new – but not debut – self-titled album via Americana Vibes. The decision to self-title the album came from a reflection that they’d paid their dues and they can now take a collective pride in the process from song selection to studio production to composition to playback. “Although we’re proud of our other albums, we feel like we nailed this one,” explains mandolinist and vocalist Ben Weiss, “In the recording process, you normally feel like you’ve listened back too much and you don’t want to ever hear these songs again, but that’s not the case with this record.

Sure, I could climb high in a tree, or go to Skye on my holiday. I could be happy. All I really want is the excitement of first hearing The Byrds, the amazement of decades of Dylan's music, or the thrill of seeing a band like The Long Ryders live. That's not much to ask, is it?
