Check out the video premiere of the latest single from roots musician Phil Gammage. ‘So Long and Goodbye’ features the soaring harmonica of his friend, the Albany-based Michael LaPorte, alongside Gammage’s warm, distinctive voice. Originally from Houston, Texas, the singer-songwriter has made the sounds and mood of New York City his home. In the accompanying video, the footage of the historic Arbor Hill neighbourhood in Albany, New York, goes hand in hand with the old-time feel of the song and its sentimental look back at summers gone by. The visual was inspired by Albany author William Kennedy, whose popular works focused on the city back in the 1930s and 1940s.
With eight records now released, Gammage is developing a reputation for strong live performances and timeless music, covering a range of genres. For many years, his songs have found the place where country, folk and blues meet and his sonorous vocal style has been likened to Johnny Cash or Elvis. Gammage certainly seems to be channeling those timeless artists in his throwback songs. Look out for the new album ‘From Nowhere to Somewhere’, which is due to drop on 22nd October 2021.
